How many cultures, even without full-blown sacred sex traditions, have customs based on similar principles. Here are a few: Native American/Shamanism, Wicca, Middle Eastern belly dance, and Hawaiian hula. _________________ Sexual union is a mirror of Spiritual Union, and a gateway to direct experience of it. |

sacred sex tradition in the West Posted: April 9, 2005 |

Most tribes of American Indians had an extremely potent sacred sex practice. Initiation of young maidens was the responsiblity of an Elder male of the tribe and initiation of young warrors was the responsibility of an Elder female.
The Goddess /Great Spirit worship of American Indians is an expression of their balanced approach to life and worship . Sacred dance , chant, smoke, trance, ecstatic sex as a general veneration of life and it's mysteries and a ribald humor { see" How God got a waste hole" a tribal view of creation} are the hallmarks of a highly refined world view and comfort with man's "place in the scheme of things" and sex as CENTRAL TO LIFE.
The ancestors of American Indians came from Russia via Siberia across the Bering Straight to North America and down into what became the US . Undobtedly the sacred sex and Goddess /Great Spirit traditions
came with them in their migrations and settlements. Witness the earth centered spirituality of Eskimos, American Indians, Incas and Aztecs
All had sacred sex traditions as means to attunement with Spirit on Earth. _________________ To be loved deeply by someone gives you strength, to love someone deeply gives you courage. Lao Tzu |

Thanks for that great input, Russ. Everyone's familiar with the beauty of the earth-centered Native American cultures, but not much is said about how that expresses itself in their sexual rituals.
I encourage others, especially Native Americans, to post more traditions they know of.
